About the Dance

Samba is a Latin dance from Brazil. There have been several different versions of the dance throughout history and around the world.

A precursor to Samba, called Maxixe (pronounced "ma-sheesh"), was popular around the world in the 1910s.

An evolved version, called Samba, was introduced to the world in the early 1920s, and gained newfound popularity under this name in the 1940s.

Since then, in its country of origin, Brazil, it has evolved into a third version, called Samba de Gafieira.
