Merengue is a popular Latin dance with Dominican origins.
It was introduced to the United States in 1953 by General Manuel A. de Moya and his wife at an embassy party, and it quickly caught on.
The 1950s version was largely based on footwork variations, but as Merengue cross-pollinated with Swing dancing, it evolved into the largely turns-based version we see today.
